Mayor Brodeur issues a challenge of 100 for 100% to increase the number of participants enrolled in the Melrose Community Power’s 100% renewable energy option by 100

MCP #100for100

MELROSE, MA--Mayor Brodeur has set a goal to increase the number of participants in the 100% renewable energy option through the City’s electricity supply program, called Melrose Community Power (MCP), with 100 additional households by the end of April. The program, which has been in operation since 2016, is designed to provide more electricity options for residents, businesses, and other electric ratepayers in Melrose, and one of those options matches 100% of a customer’s consumption with Renewable Energy Certificates (MA Class I RECs).

“The City is committed to addressing the climate crisis and doing so in an effective and efficient way by reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in our electricity supply,” said Mayor Brodeur. “We will reach out to the community to explain our MCP program and the benefits of supporting the growth of renewable energy in New England through the 100% option. I am confident that we can meet the 100 for 100% goal by the end of April.”

Most of the residents and businesses in Melrose already participate in the program and most of those receive the standard electricity product called Local Green, which has 5% more renewable energy certificates (MA Class I RECs) than the minimum required by the Commonwealth. While adding 5% to the standard option, which is used by so many in Melrose, has a positive impact on renewable energy generation, having more participants in the 100% product would increase the impact even more.
