HEAT ADVISORY: Heat Wave Expected Until Thursday

Heat Advisory Map

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has issued a Heat Advisory in effect from 3:30 AM this morning through 7 PM Wednesday, June 30th, with heat indices reaching up to 106° in some areas with little nighttime relief. Residents are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect themselves from extreme heat.

Groups especially at risk of heat-related illness and injury include older adults, pregnant people, small children, and outdoor workers.

The City of Melrose offers the following tips to help residents stay safe:

  • Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle, even with the windows cracked.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Eat balanced, light, regular meals.
  • Limit time in the sun, and always use sun protection.
  • Avoid strenuous activity.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
  • Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions, those who may need additional assistance, and those who may not have air conditioning.
  • Cool off at the Lawrence W. Lloyd Memorial Swimming Pool (open 11:45 AM – 6:45 PM) or the Melrose Public Library (open Monday – Thursday 10 AM – 9 PM, Friday 10 AM – 5 PM).
  • Recognize the signs of heat-related illness.
