Demolition Begins to Make Way for New Building at 419-429 Main Street

As you may have already noticed, the building at 419-429 Main Street is being razed. The building is known by many as the “Coffee, Tea and Me” building because that was such a popular local destination, but it also housed several other local businesses in recent years, including Jeff Carbone Insurance Agency, Roman Music Therapy, Mike’s Barber Shop, Demiche Salon, and North Shore Martial Arts Studio.

The building changed ownership last year, and as the new owners began to renovate it, they became aware of some significant structural problems. They decided to tear it down and build a new building, which was approved by the Planning Board last November. It has been carefully designed to reflect the character of our historic downtown, with a strong presence on Main Street and space for three businesses on the ground floor and 10 apartments above, all of which will add to the vitality of our downtown.

We anticipate that the building will take approximately one year to construct. There will be some disruption during the demolition and construction, but the contractors are taking special precautions to protect pedestrians, including fencing around all four sides and a pedestrian walkway, and they are working closely with city officials to ensure public safety is a priority.
