Citywide Band Night Poster

Calling all students grades 3-8! You are invited to come march with the Band! Students will get a chance to go on the Fred Green Field and learn to march with the MHS Marching Band on Tuesday, October 15! (Younger band students, please bring your instrument)

Watch a marching demonstration, meet the band members, and learn how to march out on the field under the big lights! Elementary band students should bring their instruments.

The night will conclude with a private performance of our 2019 Halftime Show - "Reach for the Stars"

The event is 6:00 - 7 pm on the Fred Green Field. We hope to see you there!

Benefits of Citywide Band Night:

  • Students who play a band instrument from grades 3 - 12 are all on the field with each other at the same time! Students realize that they are part of a community by playing their instruments.
  • Band is a team activity where everyone matters, and everyone participates! Young students get to see first-hand what this looks like up close. There are subtle structures, systems, norms, processes, expectations, ideas, etc. that are learned as a natural by-product of being part of a group like this.
  • Younger students have a chance to interact with and learn from older students in a fun atmosphere. They will learn there are systems and vocabulary that all band students know and use to work together. Knowing the systems and vocabulary facilitates teamwork, understanding, and enjoyment.
  • High school students love working with the younger students(!) and get much fulfillment out of helping them as well as gaining experience in working with and mentoring younger students.

What are some great opportunities at Citywide Band Night?

  • Students who play a band instrument from grades 3 - 12 are all on the field with each other at the same time. Students realize that they are part of a community by playing their instruments.
  • Students get to see how many other kids are doing what they do! In the weekly small group setting, it is easy not to know that you are part of something much bigger. Again, feeling part of a community has a strong positive effect on students.
  • Younger students have a chance to interact with and learn from older students in a fun atmosphere.
  • Younger students will learn that there are systems and vocabulary that all Band students know and use to work together. Understanding these systems and vocabulary facilitates teamwork, understanding, and enjoyment.
  • By watching the High School students rehearse, younger students can see what they are working towards as they get older. This example helps give meaning to their lessons and practice while planting the seeds for intrinsic motivation.
  • Younger students work directly with high school students who, in many cases, become role models and inspiration to these young students. Knowing an older student, having them know you, and want to help you, can boost a young student's self-esteem.
  • Band is a team activity where everyone matters, and everyone participates. Young students get to see first-hand what this looks like up close. There are subtle structures, systems, norms, processes, expectations, ideas, etc. that are learned as a natural by-product of being part of a group like this.
  • These intangibles can have a lasting positive impact on students when nurtured.
  • High school students love working with the younger students(!) and get much fulfillment out of helping them as well as gaining experience in working with and mentoring younger students.
