The City of Melrose Offers Discounted Earth Machine Compost Bins

MELROSE, MA—As in years past, the Melrose Department of Public Works is selling Earth Machine Compost bins, giving residents the opportunity to reduce waste. The City has distributed 44 bins this year, and is accepting new orders on a rolling basis.

Thanks to a grant from MassDEP, these compost bins are available to Melrose residents for a discounted rate of $30.

Environmental Outreach Coordinator, Lisa Scott, is overseeing the initiative.

“Composting is such a simple way to divert material out of the solid waste stream. The material it produces can be used as fertilizer,” Scott said. “It’s recycling in its purest form. I’m really excited to see the increased demand for compost bins in the community.”

Scott, who joined the DPW in April, is also working to educate the community about composting and other waste reduction methods by connecting them to resources such as the ZeroWaste Melrose recyclopedia.

“Lisa’s work is so important to achieving our sustainability goals,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that composting has environmental and economic benefits. When we compost instead of sending food waste to landfills, we reduce methane emissions and save money.”

Anyone interested in purchasing an Earth Machine compost bin should visit the City’s website or contact Lisa Scott at 781-665-0142.
