Annual Tree Planting Program

Each year, the City’s Tree Planting Program replaces trees and fulfills requests for trees on Melrose’s tree belt, the strip of ground located between the sidewalk line and the curb line, throughout the City.

Melrose residents can request a tree to be planted in front of their residency (on the tree belt). The DPW accepts these requests on a rolling basis. The waitlist for requested trees is currently between 1 to 2 years. Ahead of requesting a tree, residents should review the City’s List of Approved Trees. To request a tree, please call the DPW at (781) 665-0142.

Residents will receive a letter in the mail when they have been selected as potential tree recipients.

Please note: trees are planted at the discretion of the Tree Warden. If the “tree belt” in front of your residence is not a suitable location or if you do not have a “tree belt”, the City can, in certain cases, plant trees “setback” on your property.

Please see below for a complete list of Tree Planting Guidelines. The final location of a tree will be determined by the Tree Warden. Once a tree is planted it will be staked and tied, and the basin will be mulched.

A “Gator Bag” will also be affixed to the tree for watering. After a short while, the gator bag will be removed. It is important for the residents to water newly planted trees for at least a year to assure they won’t die and to maintain proper growth.

If you would like to request a tree, please call the DPW at (781) 665-0142.
