Operations

The citizens of Melrose enjoy the protection provided by the 58 members of the City’s Fire Department under the command of Acting Chief John White. Operating out of three stations located across the City, the Department provides fire protection, emergency medical services and numerous response capabilities – truly an “all hazards” Fire Department.

The newly created Emergency Medical Services Division is charged with providing emergency ambulance service to the citizens of Melrose. The Fire Alarm Division, operated by the Superintendent of Fire Alarm Kevin Walsh, maintains the municipal fire alarm circuits and box plug-outs, the fire dispatch center, and the public safety radio system. The Fire Prevention Division can be contacted at 781-979-4405.

Acting Chief White and the Melrose Fire Department support child safety. Children under the age of 12 years old should ride in the back seat of a motor vehicle in a professionally installed, federally approved child safety restraint. Children over 5 years old and over 40 lbs. should ride in booster seats. Children should ride in the front seat only when the vehicle is not equipped with a back seat, and only when they can be properly restrained and the passenger air bag is disabled.
