Trail Steward Program

The Melrose Trail Stewardship program is designed to help identify: areas where better trail marking/blazing is necessary, produce more accurate trail maps, install consistent signage, identify any inconsistent signage, identify and control illegal dumping and promote better trail networks.

The Trail Stewards are the “Eyes and Ears” of the commission that regularly walk the trails and let us know where the issues are and help us address them quickly.  As a Trail Steward, you will walk your designated area once a month and fill out a report form (online google form) indicating your name, email address, what property you walked, the date you were there, what issues you saw, if any and any additional information such as photos, gps tracks, etc…

This program will evolve and adjust as necessary, at the moment we are utilizing 2 to 3 Stewards per site for a 6 month commitment.

 Trail Steward Core Responsibilities:

  1. Visit your specified area at least once a month.
  2. Remove any small amounts of trash that may be on the trail
  3. Report any excessive trash, downed trees or limbs blocking trails, motorized vehicle use, drainage issues on the trails, overgrown areas or damage to signage.
  4. Identify more labor intensive maintenance that may be needed.
  5. Assist with trail marker installation and identify areas where improved signage is necessary.
