Project: Pop-Up

Melrose is thrilled to welcome entrepreneurs, artists, eateries and more to our community to fill otherwise dormant storefronts with vibrancy and vitality while driving traffic to each area’s core of locally owned businesses.

In the Fall of 2021 the City of Melrose launched a program to fill vacant storefronts with small retailers, artists, and makers. The project is designed to provide opportunities for economic growth and added vitality in Melrose's thriving business districts. The project is funded through a grant from Massachusetts Office of Business Development’s Regional Pilot Project Grant Program and a State Economic Development Earmark, as part of overall efforts to aid in the Commonwealth's economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Project: Pop-Up allows small retailers to access 1-2 currently vacant storefronts at a significantly reduced cost. The retailers will “pop up” for up to one year to introduce their businesses to a wider audience, and will have access to a range of support services such as marketing and PR opportunities, and signage and event stipends to help ensure their success.

Melrose is partnering with UpNext, a Newton-based, woman-owned business that connects emerging brands to available spaces. UpNext worked with local community groups and the Melrose Chamber of Commerce to identify small businesses to occupy the spaces later this summer, with a focus on local e-retailers, artists, and artisans.
