Ensure Your Business Won’t Be Affected by National Grid Winter Rate Hike

National Grid announced that as of November 1, 2022, the default small business G-1 Basic Service Fixed supply rate will be about 32 cents/kWh, which is significantly higher than the standard Melrose Local Green supply rate of 11.537 cents/kWh. National Grid’s rates change twice a year for small business customers on May 1 and November 1, but Melrose Community Power (MCP) rates are fixed for the duration of the City contract, which expires in November 2024. Melrose businesses already enrolled in MCP will not be impacted by the rate hike recently announced by National Grid

Many businesses may be under contract with a third-party supplier but if the contract has expired the current supply rate may be higher than the MCP rate. Contact the supplier to determine the contract termination penalties, if any, before switching to MCP.

Melrose residents and businesses can confirm that they are enrolled in Melrose Community Power by looking at the Supply Services Section of a recent National Grid electric bill. If it says “Supplier: NEXTERA ENERGY SRVCS MA-MELROSE AGG”, then that account is enrolled. If it says something else such as Basic Service Fixed or names a supplier other than NEXTERA then that account is not enrolled. Click here for a sample bill.

Melrose Small Business Energy Challenge

The City of Melrose and the Melrose Chamber of Commerce are working together to help our business community access energy efficiency opportunities through the newly launched Melrose Small Business Energy Challenge. In support of this effort, the city received a grant for the Community First Partnership from Mass Save® sponsor, National Grid, to help increase participation in energy efficiency programs.

Energy Source, the contracted small business vendor with National Grid, is supporting these efforts by scheduling and conducting no-cost, small business energy assessments. City staff and Melrose Energy Commission volunteers canvassed businesses in July with the Energy Source Team. To schedule an energy assessment you may call 1-888-490-7555.

Energy experts will work with Melrose business owners to conduct these energy assessments in your location without interrupting your core business. Their team will provide recommendations for improving energy efficiency - from LED lighting and water conservation measures, to heating system upgrades and insulation.

The Energy Source team will:

  • Collect all relevant site data
  • Provide a summary of savings opportunities
  • Apply and review all available incentives
  • Manage project installation upon your approval

If you have any questions about the program, the city contact is Sustainability Manager Martha Grover who can be reached at 781-979-4195 or by email at mgrover@cityofmelrose.org. We are excited to work with you to help your business continue to thrive in Melrose.
