Special Collections & Events

Melrose provides various opportunities to safely and correctly dispose of certain items that cannot be disposed of in regular trash and recycling curbside collection. See the Schedule of Fees for pricing and below for detailed information.

Compost Bins & Rain Barrels

The 2023 Spring rain barrel sale has now concluded. Check back in Spring 2024 for updates for the next sale!

Compost bins are available for purchase and pickup at any time from the DPW City Yard. Please call 781-665-0142 or email recycle@cityofmelrose.org to arrange pickup, inquire for more details or to ask questions! 

Metal Items

Metal items can be picked up curbside by scheduling a pickup by buying a sticker ($25 – checks or cash only) at the Public Works Operations Facility. Items may also be paid for online ahead of arrival at the city yard with a credit/debit card by visiting https://epay.cityhallsystems.com/. The pickups are done every Tuesday. Metal items include: washers, dryers, refrigerators, exercise equipment, air conditioners, grills, snow blowers, hot water heaters, microwaves as well as sectionals, sleeper sofas, recliners or other furniture that has a metal base. Metal items can also be dropped off at Saturday Recycling Events for $25.”

All doors must be removed from refrigerators, freezers and other major appliances before these items are placed at curbside for collection. The City of Melrose will not pick up items with doors still attached. All glass must be removed from storm doors or other metal frames before the frames are set out for collection.

Empty propane tanks may be brought to the Recycling Center for recycling Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (8:00 am - 2:45 pm), see pricing on the Schedule of Fees, and make payment in the Office. 

Electronics

TVs and computer monitors can be picked up curbside by buying a sticker ($25) and scheduling pickup at the Public Works Operations Facility (Office hours Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 3:30 pm). TVs, laptops and computer monitors can also be dropped off at the DPW Recycling Center on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (8:00 am - 2:45 pm), see pricing on the Schedule of Fees, and make payment in the Office or at one of our Saturday Recycling Events for $20.

Small home and office electronics can be recycled at the DPW Recycling Center on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (8:00 am - 2:45 pm). See pricing on the Schedule of Fees, and make payment in the Office or at one of our Saturday Recycling Events. Small electronics include: desktop printers & scanners, computer towers (CPUs), phones, DVD players. 

Saturday Recycling Events

DPW holds Saturday Recycling Events to provide opportunities to recycle various items. These events include rigid plastics recycling, paper shredding, mattress recycling, and pumpkin composting. A printable calendar can be found on the Calendars & Schedules page.

Household Hazardous Waste
