On January 13, 2018, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church is hosting a “Dance Party for Puerto Rico” fundraiser at historic Memorial Hall at 590 Main Street in downtown Melrose.

All event proceeds will benefit Brigada Solidaria del Oeste (The Solidarity Brigade of the West), a group that has been visiting communities on the west coast of Puerto Rico to identify and meet pressing needs in the wake of the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria in September. Many homes and jobs were lost in the storm, and some parts of the island are not expected to regain electricity until at least May. Island residents confirm that members of Brigada Solidaria del Oeste are on the ground every day offering help and supplies to impacted people and communities.

Two area bands will donate their time and talent to provide live dance music at the fundraiser. Jump Ship, Melrose resident Kent Vienot's band, will share a mix of danceable, soulful rock, spanning Jackson 5 to Maroon 5. And Teal Street Band, Melrose resident Bob Nasella's band, is a high-energy rock band that will showcase favorite classic and contemporary rock, alternative, R&B, pop and dance artists. There will be a cash bar of beer and wine.

Dance tickets can be purchased in advance at www.eventbrite.com/e/dance-party-for-puerto-rico-tickets-41067088768 for $20 each plus online processing fees. Tickets will also be available at the door on the evening of the event. The sponsors hope to make this a big community-wide effort to help a fellow community in need.

Note: The Patriots game will be viewable at the dance

Residents can help spread the word about the fundraiser by sharing an invitation to the event with family and friends. Visit the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church Facebook page for a shareable link to the event invitation for the Dance Party for Puerto Rico.
