On Saturday, May 20, Melrose DPW is hosting a plastic bag recycling drop off event at the DPW Recycling Center at 72 Tremont Street from 8 a.m. to noon.
Despite the recycling symbol on plastic bags, they cannot go into your curbside recycling bins OR in any of the large black recycling containers at the DPW Recycling Center. However, they can be recycled separately from regular curbside recycling year round at stores such as Whole Foods, Shaws, Lowes, and Target. Many of the plastic bags and film are recycled into composite lumber for decks.
The plastic bags and film that will be accepted at the event include: clean, dry shopping, produce and bread bags, newspaper bags, dry cleaning bags, case wrap (ex. wraps on beverage cases) and deflated packing air pillows.
This event is made possible through a partnership with Whole Foods Market Melrose.
The items collected at all Saturday recycling events (besides Swap Day & Household Hazardous Waste Day) include: screens (TVs, monitors & laptops: $20), metal goods ($25), tires ($2-$8), office electronics, CFL bulbs, books, clothes, mercury items, clean, dry plastic bags & dried latex paint. Recycling Center stickers & recycling label stickers will also be available.
