Appropriations Committee

Vice-Chairman Boisselle, Mortimer, Infurna, Tramontozzi, Forbes, Wright, McAteer-Margolis, Seaboyer, Medeiros, Conn

Tardy: Brodeur

In attendance: Mayor Dolan

Appropriations called to order by Vice-Chairman Boisselle at 7:25 p.m.

Order No. 08-196, APPOINTMENT Of: Bryan E. Thorp, 77 Wentworth Rd., Melrose To: Board of Appeals Term to expire the first Monday in January, 2011

Alderman Mortimer motions to suspend the rules to allow Mayor Dolan to introduce Mr. Thorp, 2nd by Alderman Forbes.  All in favor.

Mayor Dolan nominates Bryan Thorp to this important position.  He says that Mr. Thorp's credentials are outstanding and the Mayor is happy that he is willing to share his experience and willing to make this commitment.

Mr. Thorp says he is honored to be nominated to the position.  He says he knows from being involved in an architectural practice and having experience going before zoning boards that it is a critical role.  He applauds the Melrose Planning Board's recent adoption of the Smart Growth policy.

Alderman Wright asks about his appearing before zoning boards in the past.  Mr. Thorp says he served as the project architect for the Masconomet Regional High School and presented the plans and design for it.  He has also appeared before the city of Boston's ZBA.  As a former member of the Melrose Zoning Board of Appeals, Alderman Wright thanks Mr. Thorp for volunteering and thanks Mayor Dolan for bringing forward a qualified candidate.  He says that most things before the Melrose ZBA are not complex but have an impact on the neighborhoods.  He recommends to Mr. Thorp that he take advantage of Chairman Steve Broadley's experience and says the City Solicitor's office is also a great resource.

Alderman Mortimer moves to recommend, 2nd by Alderman McAteer-Margolis.  All in favor.

Alderman Brodeur motions to adjourn, 2nd by Alderman Mortimer.  All in favor.

Appropriations adjourns at 7:30 p.m.
