Dolan recently presented to the Board of Alderman and School Committee a
proposal highlighting the benefits of the City joining the Group Insurance
Commission (GIC).
This
opportunity is a result of Governor Patrick's proposal, passed by the
Massachusetts Legislature, to let cities and towns join the state’s GIC
for the purpose of providing health insurance for municipal employees. It
is intended to help communities, including Melrose, save money because GIC
rate increases have been lower than those being paid by municipalities in
recent years.
Under the legislation, any final agreement is dependant upon 70 percent of
the City's unions approving the move.
