Thomas Lynde was one of the first settlers of Melrose. He built a farm
near the current location of the Wyoming Cemetery. There remains a
memorial to him near the Sylvan Street entrance. The Lynde family
eventually built homes all over Melrose and greatly influenced its history
and development. This route passes several of the former Lynde homes.
Begin
this route at the Jabez Lynde House at 407 Washington Street. Turn left
onto Lynde Avenue. When you reach West Wyoming St., turn right and
continue to Main Street. Turn left onto Main Street and then right onto
Lynde Street. Continue until you reach the Milano Park. (This is a small
park and part of the “Adopt-A-Site” program. Former Melrose Mayor
James Milano takes care of it himself to this day.)
Across
from you, at the intersection of Grove and Lebanon Street is the Joseph
Lynde House at 409 Lebanon Street. Turn right onto Lebanon Street and
continue down to the Wyoming Cemetery. Turn right onto Sylvan Street. This
is the former site of the first Lynde House, and the Ensign Thomas Lynde
House Memorial is still there. Turn right onto Main Street after you pass
Pine Banks Field on your left. Continue up Main Street and you will pass
244 Main Street, the former Warren Lynde House. Finally continue up to
West Wyoming Ave and turn left. When you reach 80 West Wyoming, go a short
distance beyond to complete the route at the Lincoln Elementary School.
