This new Middle School will set a strong
precedent for future Green Schools in the Commonwealth
of
Massachusetts.
This school is the first to receive Massachusetts
Green School Certification under enhanced Department of Education
guidelines. The building
utilizes energy efficient systems, low emitting construction materials,
pollution controls, and sustainable materials.
Specific “high performance” elements include efficient
condensing boilers, high efficiency light fixtures, energy occupancy
sensors, and plumbing fixtures that will reduce water usage by 30%.
All in all, the building will achieve 30% energy savings,
surpassing the Green Schools certification requirement by 10%.
Large, rooftop solar panels will contribute to the building’s
energy usage and serve as an educational tool.
Furthermore, a recycling education program and a recycling contest
among the students will be launched in the Middle School at the end of
September. Two Middle School
educators attended the National Energy Education Development (NEED)
curriculum training seminar in
Washington,
D.C.
this summer.
