Honoring a Helpful Neighbor

I was happy to welcome Melrose High School student Cindy Zhu and her family, along with Melrose Police Officer Richard Conners and his family, to City Hall recently for a special presentation.

Last summer, Officer Conners was called to investigate an incident in a downtown Melrose store, and when he got there, he realized the victim spoke Chinese and knew very little English. After a few unsuccessful attempts to communicate, he called Cindy, who is his neighbor, and who he knew speaks fluent Mandarin. She was able to translate over the phone so he could take a statement from the witness. Thanks to Cindy’s help, he was able to communicate more easily and not only get information but assist the victim.

I want to commend Cindy for her willingness to step in and help a stranger and Officer Conners for his quick thinking!
